Our project. Our team.

Mapping our Memories is a Back Lane Studios project inspired by the wonderful stories seniors have shared with us in our video-making programs. Their experiences remind us how different life was in past decades and how much history is embodied in these memories.  We want to collect and preserve these recollections, linking them to our digital map to make them easily accessible.

The Mapping our Memories team includes two former Toronto Star journalists, a west-end writer, a former teacher and a network of passionate volunteers. To start, we are focusing on the west end of Toronto, but we welcome memorable stories from across the city. In the coming months, we will be holding workshops in interviewing techniques, writing, research, photography and, as we emerge from the pandemic, in audio and video story-telling. This is an ambitious undertaking, and we need lots of help. Meet the team behind this project below:

Before that, she worked in educational book publishing, taught upgrading at Humber College, developed a home improvement magazine and became an English as a second language teacher. Always interested in community issues, she has served on the board of the not-for-profit Revue Cinema which partially inspired the idea for Back Lane Studios and CityShorts.

Cathy Dunphy

A staff writer for more than 25 years at the Toronto Star, Cathy Dunphy is also the author of a biography of Henry Morgentaler, two young adult fiction books based on the popular Degrassi High TV show, screenplays for television and a four-part mystery series for radio. Cathy has taught at Ryerson and worked with seniors to produce a podcast series called “I Was Here" at the Chang School of Continuing Education. Email catherinedunphy@rogers.com
